Feedback Needed for HCA Standards of Practice
The Government of Alberta recently announced that Health Care Aide (HCA) regulation will come into force on February 2, 2026. When HCA regulation comes into effect, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) will become one college regulating two distinct professions: Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides, changing its name to the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA).
Under the Health Professions Act, the CLPNA is required to create standards of practice explaining the minimum legal and professional expectations of HCA practice when regulation comes into effect. The CLPNA is also required to establish a code of ethics for HCAs.
The CLPNA is seeking feedback on several draft standards of practice for HCAs as well as the draft Code of Ethics for HCAs in Alberta.
Input from LPNs and other interested parties is essential in preparing these documents before being formally submitted to the Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services for review.
Please provide your feedback by September 4, 2025.
