Council Connections: July 2025
Update from the most recent CLPNA Council meeting
The Council of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) is responsible for the oversight of the organization and for guiding our strategic direction. The Council consists of 50% regulated members and 50% public members.
The Council held its quarterly meeting on May 29 and 30. A summary of key activities is below.
Membership Changes
The terms for the Council President and Vice President expire on August 31. From September 1, Ashley Cesar, formerly the Council’s Vice President, will serve a three-year term as Council President. Kristan Reynolds will serve a two-year term as Vice President. The May meeting was the last for the outgoing President, Kurtis Kooiker, and Public Member Lisa Stebbins.
Ownership Linkage and Education
To inform strategic direction and decision-making, the Council engages in work to support better understanding of the populations that LPNs serve and the role of a regulator in an evolving healthcare system. At this meeting, Council members received presentations related to provincial policies and priorities, Government of Alberta workforce planning, and the ethics of artificial intelligence in healthcare.
Ongoing Monitoring of the Organization
The CLPNA Council approves and monitors the CLPNA’s operations and evaluates the performance of the CEO. At this meeting, the Council received and accepted monitoring reports on the following:
- Financial condition
- Asset protection
Regulatory Approvals
Education Program Approvals
Under the Health Professions Act, the CLPNA Council approves all practical nurse education programs in Alberta. This includes diploma programs, programs leading to advanced authorization, as well as refresher programs.
In May, the Council approved the brokered practical nurse diploma program at Prairie College through Red Deer Polytechnic and the diploma program at Medicine Hat College.
Registration Fees for Interjurisdictional Nursing Licensure and Courtesy Register
The Council approved amendments to the fee schedule to establish fees for Interjurisdictional Nursing Licensure and to lower the fee for the LPN Courtesy Register. These amendments are effective August 1, 2025.
Bylaw Revision
The Council approved a revision of the CLPNA Bylaws that will come into effect upon HCA regulation.
